Introduction to Beekeeping Class

Are you interested in beekeeping but don’t know where to begin? Are you a beekeeper interested in improving your skills? The PCBA’s bee school is a great place to start.

Overview

This year's course will be focused on beekeeping using generally accepted beekeeping practices for traditional Langstroth style beehives. Knowledgeable, highly-experienced instructors cover the biology of beekeeping, essential beekeeping skills, monitoring and treatment of pests and diseases, seasonal hive management and other relevant topics. At the end of the course, you will be prepared to begin beekeeping. Bee school graduates also have the opportunity to take the NCSBA Certified Beekeeper written exam.

Schedule of Classes

March 20, 2021


8:30 AM:  Coffee and donuts. Complete registration. Receive any outstanding payments. 

 

9:00 AM:  Intro to beekeeping. Discuss what the class will cover.   Why bees are important to agriculture and consumers. Discuss the % of food that requires bees, and other pollinators. What foods that are dependent on bees/pollinators. Who are the people responsible for modern beekeeping and some of the significant beekeepers in history. Resources for beekeeping, i.e. local merchants and online suppliers.  

 

10:00 AM:  Anatomy of bees. Life cycle of bees. Roles of different types of bees. Different breeds of bees, their pros and cons. Other types of bees, non honeybees, and the differences and similarities to other insects. Bee communication (waggle dance and pheromones)

 

11:00 AM:  Equipment, clothing, and tools of the beekeeper. Parts of the hive box. Different types of hive boxes. Some hands on time with a complete hive box, including, all sizes of boxes, and what they are for. Answer any questions for first quarter. 

 

12:00 - 1:00 PM:  Break for lunch.  PCBA will provide lunch. Opportunity to buy PCBA t-shirts and any other items. 

 

1:00 PM:  Pests and threats to bees and hives. Very brief touch on Varroa, as this will be discussed in the next hour. Discuss environmental and seasonal issues and how to prepare and combat these issues. Talk about wax moths and hive beetles. 

 

2:00 PM:  Varroa hour. Discuss these pests and how we are fighting them. What conditions they cause, and where they come from. Discuss the 2 types of mite detection, and the tools needed to do these tests. 

 

3:00 PM:  Q&A and review of first day.  Discuss opportunities to attend Community Apiary for hands on experience.

 


March 27, 2021


8:30 AM:  Coffee and donuts.

9:00 AM:   Review from first class.  Answer any questions.  Discuss getting started in beekeeping with nucs, packages, complete hives or swarms.  Setting up a bee yard.  Recommended directions and proper ventilation.

 

10:00 AM:   Products of the hive. Discuss honey, beeswax, pollen, propolis, royal jelly, etc.

 

11:00 AM:   Planting for bees.  Range of foraging

 

12:00 - 1:00 PM:  Break for lunch.  PCBA will provide lunch. Opportunity to buy PCBA t-shirts and any other items. 

 

1:00 PM:   Seasonal management/Calendar of beekeeping

 

2:00 PM:   Review of full course & materials.  Test discussion.  Discuss opportunities to attend Community Apiary for hands on experience.

 

3:00 PM:  NCSBA certification test.  After completion, discuss dates for field days to complete practical test.

“First Lessons in Beekeeping” by Dr. Keith S. Delaplane (to be purchased by student before the first class; available for less than $10 at Bailey Bee Supply in Hillsborough or it can be purchased on-line)
